Instructions on How to Convert Your Resume to ASCII Format
(American Standard Code for Information Interchange)

First prepare
your resume as a normal Word document and save it using whatever name you
choose.
Close the document (Ctrl W), but not MS Word.
Next, re-open the document you just saved (Ctrl O), find the document, and click on its name just once to highlight it.
Then Go to File>Save As
In the line entitled 'File Name', choose another name for this document, like
'My Resume In ASCII'
In the 'Save As Type' line, drop down and select 'Text Only' or
'Text Only With Line Breaks'.
NOTE: In Windows XP, it is
listed as 'Plain Text'
Then Click
'Save'.
To view the document in its new form, open it again (Ctrl O) and find the file.
Notice the extension at the end is now (.txt)
You will notice that it looks quite a bit different than when you
typed it.
As the ASCII format doesn't support bolding, italics, or many font styles, the conversion has changed its appearance.
Before sending your resume over the Internet, chances are you will need to tweak it a little bit.
Your bullets may have changed into question marks, and you might notice other formatting has been altered.
You can easily fix the issue of the question marks by using your Find>Replace option.
Type Ctrl+F, click on Replace. Type a ? in the 'Find' space.
Then
under 'Replace', type an * (asterisk), which is Shift 8. Select 'Replace All.'
Make sure to Save your
changes.

Another method of saving your resume to ASCII is using Notepad.
I have used this method often, because it
saves me some steps. Notepad doesn't change the bullets into ?'s,
though I always go through the converted document with a fine tooth comb to make sure all looks good.
After preparing your resume in Word, close it (Ctrl W) and then re-open it (Ctrl O).
Under File>Save As, assign it a different name, and select 'Text Only' or 'Plain Text' in the 'Save As'
drop down menu.
Close the document and re-open it by clicking on its name in the directory.
It will automatically open as a Notepad document. Notice it's new extension will be .txt.
Here is a second way to convert your document using Notepad.
In the original Word document, select all the text (Ctrl A), then Copy (Ctrl C) to put it on the clipboard.
Open Notepad on your computer, File>New, then paste (Ctrl V) the material into the new page.
Save it (Ctrl S) in 'My Documents' or wherever you want to save it, and assign it a name.
Once it has been saved, you will notice that it now has the .txt extension.
